GO F59PH

The F59PH was commissioned by, and designed in close cooperation with, Ontario’s Toronto-area commuter agency GO Transit. The concept of a 3000-hp passenger locomotive powered with a 12-cylinder 710G3 engine and an independent HEP engine-generator set house in a full-cowl carbody with a CN-style comfort cab was the brainchild of Go Transit’s operations division. EMD was initially reluctant to embrace this idea, but GO made a strong case for the concept, and GO 520, the first F59PH, rolled out of London in May 1988.

EMD’s positive reception to customer input paid off as the F59PH has proven to be technologically and commercially successful. GO made good on its commitment to the model, replacing its entire fleet and covering expansion services with a total of 49 F59PHs.
