SD40-2 Erie Northern #

Back in the 1960's, there was a demand for locomotives in the order of 3000hp, and in 1965 the Electro Motive Division of General Motors announced a new six-axle, 'special Duty' SD40, powered by the new 645 cubic-inch, 16-cylinder engine.

Seven years later, EMD came out with a revised version, the SD40-2, which had a number of upgrades including a new electronic control system. It was very successful and went on to become the best selling US locomotive ever, with sales exceeding 4000 units by the time production of US models ended in 1984. The largest orders for SD40-2s were for Burlington Northern, whose roster of 835 units comprised a fifth of the total fleet. A good number are also used in other countries: Canada 684; Mexico 175 and Brazil 65.

Over the years, the SD40-2 has been considered one of the world's most reliable and cost-effective diesel-electrics. Even today, more than 50 years after its introduction, a large number remain in active service. You can often find them in consists shaking hands with some of their more modern counterparts, and recent upgrades will extend their usefulness another 25 years.

Like its smaller, four-axle, 2000hp cousin, the GP38, the SD40 is a great example of American railroading in the diesel era.

Erie Northern's SD40-2 locomotive was reskinnned by Majekear of Chicken Neck Foundry, who also added the working fans and number boards.
