WIP around 95% complete. Full version to follow soon .
The Uintah Rwy was a 3ft NG line , created to transport Gilsonite from Watson Utah to Mack Colorado , around 62 miles. it was active from 1904 to 1939. Plans to expand the route to Bonanza Utah were shelved, but this version inlcudes the proposed extension which adds another 18 miles to the total. This feaures many large bridges and rugged scenery . The actual route over the 8441 ft high Baxter pass featured the steepest unassisted grades in the USA of 7.5%. and much of the rest of the route was steeply inclined and remote. The line pased through areas of shale rock, which gave unstable foundations to any bridges as the line ran next to alkaline creeks that were prone to flash floods, there were many bridges and many washouts.
The route contains most feautres that were present at the start and end of the route , this verison is set in the 1940s, but you could set it to 1904 , 1920s or as it was when it closed in 1939. traffic form Mack to Bonanza was mosly general goods,. Gilsonite, coal , wool , cattle and water were the main traffic to Mack. The railway workshops were situated at Atchee , 28 miles from Mack. the tight curves and steep grades of Baxterr pass restricted locomoives to six coupled wheels, Shays were used to haul consists over the pass and 2-8-0's and 2-8-2 locos were used to haul freignts over the rest of the line.
in 1929 Baldwin, built a 2-6-6-2 tank engine to work over Baxter pass , these rendered the 2-8-2s somewhat redundant and they were the mainstay of the line until closure in 1939.
This was a company line and the Uintah did things their own way. it ran through very remote territory and those who worked on it managed without running water and mains electricty. It peresumably worked on the token system but I cant find any references to whats system was used.
All assets should be on the DLS, you will need to download any rolling stock named URY, unfortunately most locomotives are not on the DLS other than no 51 and no 12. you can find the 0-6-2s tanks at www.steammachine.com/bdaneal . and reskinnign materials for the 2-8-2s on the Trainz forum under uintah railway in the freeware section.
This route is dedicated to the late Ben Dorsey, who created most of the rolling stock, buildings and bridges, and Gman347 who stepped into Bens shoes and created great models for the gilsonite industries and buildings at Watson and Dragon. Many thanks are also due to John Whelan, clam1952, pencil 42, Narrowgauge,Jango , Crisger, togog ,Rob Pearson for help with the DEM, Ben Neal, Frank Dean and pcas1986. to all content creators many thanks, this route would not be possible without your creations.
