SJ class Du

From 1925 and for almost 50 years the D-series locomotives were the dominating engines at SJ. The highly modern engine was useful in varying services around the country. In 1933 they were renamed and added with a second letter to distinguish their special services: Ds for express train (snälltåg); Dg for freight (godståg); Du for mixed service (universell); Dk for heavy express trains; Dr for Dk engines with higher gearing (rapid).

The first 135 engines were all built before 1934 and had wooden bodies which even at that time was quite unique. Later many of the locomotives were rebuilt and fitted with steel bodies in order to increase safety and reduce maintenance.

This particular locomotive, was originally delivered as class SJ 216 in 1925, later rebuilt to class Du 216, was taken out of service in November 1975 and scrapped in Karlskoga February 1977.
