NOTE: Although at first glance this locomotive may resemble older yard switchers, such as the SW1500, etc., it is meant to be run Cab Forward. Locomotive Information: The RP20BD is a diesel-electric switcher locomotive built by Railpower Technologies. It is a genset locomotive, having three engine-generator sets. The RP20BD locomotive uses three 667-hp genset engines. The engines are computer controlled, with the computer stopping and starting engines on a rotating basis, as required to produce the horsepower needed at any given moment. RP20BDs are rebuilt from older locomotives.
railpower claims that its RP20BD hybrid road switchers can provide fuel savings of up to 35% and reduce NOx and other emissions by approximately 80%. The three-engine non-hybrid RP switchers can provide fuel savings of up to 25%.
