The easiest and least expensive way to increase living space in a house is to create a room in the roof, and dormers to provide the light and ventilation.
These added windows come in many styles and sizes - it's not unusual to see a different type of frame layout to the rest of the building.
Historically, most shells would have been made of timber, with either hanging slates or boarding on the sides for protection. In this case, as so often in Scotland, the exterior wood has either been covered by, or replaced with, corrugated iron.
It's been set at a notional first floor height for Butt and Benn-type cottages, but will need further adjustment in most situations. There's no reason why it shouldn't be raised higher for use with two-storey buildings, too, especially away from built-up areas.
