Many smaller Scottish houses were built with front doors opening directly out on the elements, and a good many have acquired porches over the years as a first line of defence against the weather.
Here's an example of the simple, most common pattern, which was probably originally a timber structure but has since been given a protective shell of that good old rural Scottish standby, corrugated iron.
