The easiest and least expensive way to increase living space in a house is to create a room in the roof, and dormers to provide the light and ventilation.
These added windows come in many styles and sizes - it's not unusual to see a different type of frame layout to the rest of the building, and sometimes a different colour, too, as access for painting may be harder.
Historically, most shells would have been made of timber, with either hanging slates or boarding on the sides for protection. In this case, it's a boarded one.
The 3 on 6 sash windows are one solution for maintaining a harmonious look on a houses sporting 6 on 6s when lower ceilings in the roof space preclude the use of full sized windows.
It's been set at a notional two-storey floor height, but may need further adjustment in many situations.
