SBS Goods Shed (Medium) Brora, HR

When it came to goods sheds, the Highland Railway stuck to its usual practice of using standard patterns with occasional variations for all except the largest of stations. There were just two types, of roughly similar dimensions, and both built of typical Scottish battened planking (also known as 'vertical capped planking'). The first group dates from between the 1860s and mid-1890s, and the second from 1895 onwards. It's easy to tell them apart, as the first had hipped roofs, while the second had gabled roofs, canopies over the road doors, and, in at least one case, a separate office.

Brora's goods shed is the last man standing: a version 2 gable roofed type, and the sole surviving example of an HR shed in situ, although the one formerly at Nairn has been preserved at Bridge of Dun on the Caledonian Railway, just a few miles up the road from me. In both cases these were replacements for one of the earlier type that had been lost through fire, though the majority were built at stations added after the new version was introduced, which were also made of wood. Variations included a separate office extension, as at Nairn, or a lower pitch to the roof and an extra window on the road side (Dornoch): unlike the earlier series, all had chimneys throughout their lives.
