SBS Goods Shed, (Medium), Thurso, HR

When it came to goods sheds, the Highland Railway stuck to its usual practice of using standard patterns with occasional variations for all except the largest of stations. There were just two types, of roughly similar dimensions, and both built of typical Scottish battened planking. The first group date from between the 1860s and mid-1890s, and the second from 1895 onwards. It's easy to tell them apart, as the first had hipped roofs, while the second had gabled roofs, canopies over the road doors, and, in at least one case, a separate office.

Thurso's goods shed is one of the earlier tranche: similar sheds were to be found across the network, from nearby Wick to the other end of the system at Pitlochry (which was extended), as well as Garve and Achnasheen on the Kyle line: none now survive, as far as I'm aware: although a couple were destroyed by fire while still operational and were replaced with the later type, most lasted until the early diesel era. Earlier photos show some with chimneys, though none so far showing them at Thurso or Wick - Highlanders are indeed a hardy race! Three levels of LOD [3037,1085,14]
