Lighthouse Jeffery's Hook / The Little, Red Lighthouse

The Jeffery's Hook Lighthouse is a small, red, metal lighthouse with a white-and-black lantern, a clear lens and a red bulb located in Fort Washington Park on the Hudson River in Manhattan, New York City, NY, under the George Washington Bridge. It is also referred to as 'The Little Red Lighthouse'by locals. It was constructed in 1889 to guide barges on the Hudson River, but when the George Washington Bridge carrying Interstate 80 into New York City was built, sailors reported that the large bridge made it more than easy to get their bearings during the day and the bright lights on the bridge made it so easy to find their way at night, that they no longer needed the old lighthouse. The lighthouse was deactivated in 1947, but a children's book titled, 'The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge' raised awareness of the lighthouse and it was restored and reactivated in 2002. At night it flashes red every three seconds using a 300mm lens and a red bulb. Jeffery's Hook Lighthouse is located at the foot of the east tower that supports the George Washington Bridge. A large security fence wraps around it to protect it from tresspassers and tours are periodically allowed. It is accessible via Fort Washington Park and there's a steep path that leads down from the George Washington Bridge.
