Lighthouse Oak Island

The Oak Island Lighthouse is a black, white and grey, concrete lighthouse that sits on Oak Island near the mouth of the Cape Fear River in Southeastern North Carolina within the town of Caswell Beach, on Caswell Beach Road, between Elizabeth River and the Atlantic Ocean, on the east coast of the United States. The lighthouse was built to replace the Bald Head Lighthouse and the Cape Fear River Lighthouse. The Cape Fear River Lighthouse was later demolished because the U.S. Coast Guard were worried that too many lighthouses in the same place would confuse mariners. The Bald Head Lighthouse was spared. Constructed in the 1950s, Oak Island was the last lighthouse built in North Carolina and one of the last to be built in the United States. It is also the most powerful lighthouse in North Carolina. The Oak Island Lighthouse is equepped with a rare and powerful DCB-436 Aerobeacon that flashes 4 times every 10 seconds, 24 hours a day. This is a custom-built lens that was made from pieces of the original oil lamp reflectors. The light is so powerful that Coast Guard officials have to wear fire-proof suits when servicing the light to avoid getting burned by it. The front of this lighthouse faces east-ish with the Atlantic Ocean on its right-hand side and the Intercoastal Waterway on its left-hand side.
At present, there are plans to replace the DCB-436 Aerobeacon with a unique and modern LED lens.
