American Locomotive Company FA-1

F - for freight, A - for A unit, 1 - the model number. ALCo's FA1 became a stalwart of many rosters. Similiar in appearance to the famed PA, though distinctive with it's shorter nose, 864 A units & 490 B units were produced between 1946 & 1959.

A turbo charged, fuel injected 4 stroke engine, the 244 was ALCo's first diesel prime mover, taking it's name from the year in which it first ran, 1944. Dynamic braking was a factory option, and the high starting tractive effort of 60, 875lbs made it a robust and useful locomotive.

A gain of 100 horsepower came with the introduction of the FA-2, and a a dual service version, the FPA2 was made available; being fitted with steam heating equipment for passenger work. Notably many of these locomotives were built under license from ALCo by MLW for the Canadian railroads.

Production ended in 1959 with the FPA4 FPB4 series, which boasted a new power unit, the 251B, delivering 1800 horsepower. Several FAs however are still operating in North America on tourist railroads, belching the trademark clouds of heavy black smoke for all railfans to enjoy.
