SNCF BB15000

The BB15000 is an express passenger locomotive, and with a nominal rating of almost 6000hp is capable of the rapid acceleration required to perform such duties. When delivery began in 1971, The BB15000 took over services on the Paris to Strasbourg main line, on the SNCF's eastern network

In design terms, the locomotive was kept as simple as practical to keep maintenance costs to a minimum. Thyristor control gave precise control over the power delivered to the traction motors, demonstrating it's advantages over the transformer tap changers formerly standard on French AC locomotives. A single traction motor is mounted on each bogie, and geared to the axles by flexible drives.

In 1976 the SNCF took delivery of a 1500v DC version, the BB7200; and in 1977 the dual voltage BB22200, with an additional pantograph for AC operation. These DC capable locomotives are slightly longer and fitted with rheostatic braking. The effectiveness of these locomotives as haulers of high speed passenger and freight services, led to orders for over
350 of these Alsthom built units. An order for 57 similar units was placed by Nederlandse Spoorwegen,
